Unlocking happiness: How aging makes us happier than ever before

Forget the myth that happiness fades as we grow older! An article on Oprah Daily explores why a happiness boost happens as we age.

Research reveals that we’re actually wired to feel more joy and satisfaction as we hit midlife and beyond.

Sure, we might worry about getting that first piece of mail from AARP, but the truth is that happiness starts to rise after our 40s, climbing steadily upwards as the years go by.

Dartmouth College economist David Blanchflower, PhD, researched why this surprising U-shaped trend occurs.

The reasons?

Growing older brings more emotional stability, realism, and appreciation for life's simpler pleasures.

As we settle into who we are, we let go of lofty dreams—like becoming the next Aretha Franklin—and instead find joy in meaningful activities, like dancing or a quiet afternoon fishing.

Happiness in later life is also partly hardwired. As we age, the brain releases more oxytocin—a hormone that reduces stress, boosts kindness, and strengthens social bonds.

To tap into this natural happiness boost, here are four science-backed strategies:

  1. Surf your second wave of success Use your accumulated wisdom to guide and mentor others and stay open to new opportunities.
  2. Work like millennials and Gen Zers Embrace flexible work patterns, follow your passions, and choose projects that align with your values.
  3. Pull a Rodney Dangerfield Keep learning! Picking up new skills can boost cognitive function and bring new joy.
  4. Keep growing on a soul level Practice gratitude and see every challenge as a chance for growth. Staying spiritually open can turn setbacks into stepping stones.

Here’s the beautiful truth: Aging isn’t about losing your spark. It’s about discovering new ways to shine even brighter.

Embrace the journey—you’re just getting started!
